GORGEOUS HOUSE WITH SALT WATER POOL IN MAGNIFICENT OLIVE GROVE ESTATE IN EXTREMADURA, SPAIN

THE HOUSE: Beautiful traditional whitewashed house with blue wood windows with shutters, mosquito nets in all the windows, fireplaces, stunning multi-colored tiled floors painted by hand, gorgeous views of the “sierra” and the olive groves, lovingly decorated with antiques and my own paintings and a charming and healthy salt water pool with clean water without any chemical products.

HOUSE PLAN: The house has open spaces and lots of windows open to the countryside that provides a charming feeling of space. On the ground floor there is a sitting room with fireplace connected with the big kitchen by means of an arch, a room with a double bed, a bathroom with tub and another sitting room with a traditional fireplace. On the second floor we find the master bedroom: a huge room with high ceilings, two balconies with breathtaking views of the sierra, the most comfortable bed you can imagine and the master bathroom with handcrafted tiles, a polished cement shower and more views of the sierra. There is also a big attic room.

ATMOSPHERE: The house has big windows looking onto the olive trees, the sierra, the mountains and the sky and it's oriented towards east and south, with the bedrooms facing dawn, so you will wake up with the sun rays carefully warming your face…

DECORATION: We love art and the house is decorated with beautiful objects that we find in our trips, in flea markets and antiques shops, besides my own oil paintings, greatly inspired by this magnificent scenery. It has a stunning French wardrobe from the XIX century stripped in blue, extremely valuable antique lamps, oak desk from the XIX century, a kitchen elm table more than 200 hundred years old, a pine bench lovingly restored, beautiful old restored doors, a magnificent chaise longue in the master bedroom and a unique lamp designed by myself also in the master bedroom.

THE ESTATE: The house is set in around 4 Acres (2 Ha) of land, it has an olive grove with 80 mature olive trees (more than 100 years old), oaks, holm oaks and cork oaks. Yet, it is only 1 km from the town of Montánchez, famous in Spain for its exquisite Iberic ham, so you can easily walk or cycle to town. Don't be surprised if you are waved by locals riding a donkey, or greeted by horses and cute black piglets! Literally right at your doorstep (on the front porch), there is a pool around a big stone as if it were an “alberca” (traditional pond or reservoir) that functions with salted water, without chlorine. A unique and great feature of the pool is that it can filter the water on the surface (the usual), but this one can also filter the water falling as a cascade from the rock it is bulit around. In summer you can wake up and take a swim before breakfast. There is also a brick barbecue that can be used to cook alfresco.

THE AREA: the house is in the middle of a triangle formed by three important Spanish towns, two of them Unesco heritage sites: Mérida, with stunning Roman ruins scattered everywhere; Cáceres, one of the most beautiful Medieval cities of Spain and Trujillo, with a beautiful square, churches and palaces. Since it is in the middle of this triangle, it is about 40 km (half an hour) of each of one of them.

GETTING THERE / GETTING AROUND: The most convenient airport is Madrid, which is about 300 km away (2 h 45 min to 3 h). It is a town in a rural setting, so you would want a car to do sightseeing, although there are also many paths for biking and hiking around the house, and the town is very close. In summary, you would want a car to explore the region but you can also spend days around the house and town.
