Grasse
The medieval town of Grasse sits proudly overlooking the Provence countryside. Known as the perfume capital of the world, Grasse remains at the forefront of the fragrance industry, boasting production of two thirds of France’s natural aromas.
Through the old, winding streets of the “Vielle Ville,” the air is fragrant, filled with the perfume of the Jasmine flower, the fields of which surround the town. Every year at the beginning of August, the town’s largest festival, la Fête du Jasmin, or La Jasminade takes place. Here you can experience folk music, fireworks, parades and street performers, and allow yourself to be surrounded by the bouquet of flowers that are the centre of the festival.
At an altitude from 300-400m, the panoramic views from all parts of the town are breathtaking. The climate as well is unique, as the hills shelter it from the sea air whilst its elevation ensures a healthy and refreshing breeze during the normally stifling summer heat. Indeed, this Napoleon’s sister, Princess Pauline Bonaparte, used this climate to recuperate her mental and physical strength, and Grasse was also a popular winter destination for our very own Queen Victoria. At only 20 minutes from the vibrant and exclusive seaside town of Cannes, Grasse offers you the perfect retreat, but not too far from the boutiques and promenades of the Mediterranean coast.
The “Vielle Ville” is famous for its maze of meandering passageways, its cobbles, archways and steps opening out onto larger medieval squares offering a variety of cafés and restaurants which will allow you to experience traditional Provençal culture at its best.
