Grandmont, a famous monastic centre, is a small, attractive, typically French rural village surrounded by open countryside in all directions. It is set in the middle of the Monts d’Ambazac close to St Sylvestre.
The Surrounding Area
The Monts d’Ambazac range of hills, which reach up to 2,500ft at their highest point, are covered in pine, oak and beech forest, and are teaming with wildlife. It is a uniquely unspoilt area of rushing streams, lakes and deep valleys. It is a popular area for ramblers who are attracted by the many kilometres of way-marked pathways. However, it never gets crowded, even in summer. Ambazac, the nearest town, is 5 km away by car, where there are cafes, shops, a railway station, restaurants, and a twice-weekly market. Limoges, famous for its porcelain, is an attractive city on the Vienne river with a cathedral, museums, art galleries and narrow, pedestrianised streets with interesting boutiques and outdoor cafes. St. Leonard de Noblat, half an hour away, is a historic, medieval town with narrow streets, art galleries and restaurants. There are three lakes within driving distance, Lac St. Pardoux, where there is swimming and watersports, Lac Vassiviere which has an island with a contemporary art gallery and outdoor sculpture trail, and the local Ambazac lake for swimming or picnics.
